Kiel joined Tulchin Research in March of 2014, bringing with him nearly a decade of experience in political campaigns and public policy. His background includes legislative work for federal, state, and local officials and elections experience, from County Sheriff to President of the United States.
As an analyst, Kiel conducts polling and focus groups for Tulchin Research clients. As Director of Data Science, he safeguards the firm’s national reputation for accuracy through thoughtful research design, precise data collection, and ongoing innovation. And as Director of Analytics, he helps clients discover and utilize patterns in data through micro-targeting research and application.
Working for Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign, Kiel advised the campaign’s data team and managed the fielding of well over 100 surveys across 46 states and Puerto Rico, time and again accurately predicting turnout and election results, even as other pollsters missed the mark.
Kiel polls for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) independent expenditure program and has helped Democrats win key victories in California. Following the 2014 election, committee staff recognized Tulchin Research as the most accurate of ten national polling firms they relied upon that year. At the state level, Kiel has polled for several successful state legislative campaigns in competitive swing districts and played an integral part in achieving and retaining strong majorities for the Illinois House Democratic Caucus and the California Assembly Democratic Caucus.
Working with the Defenders of Wildlife, Kiel has performed research on the Endangered Species Act and other conservation and wildlife preservation issues across the country. He has polled widely on public policy issues relating to the criminal justice system for the ACLU and the ACLU of Northern California. He has helped to develop a state ballot measure aimed at abolishing the death penalty and worked as part of a bipartisan coalition with Cal Poly Institute for Technology and Public Policy, researching and developing several successful ballot measures that increase government transparency.
Prior to joining Tulchin Research, Kiel helped elect Congressman Jared Polis (CO) and former US Senator Mark Begich (AK) and managed successful campaigns for former Congressman Mike McIntyre (NC), Virginia State Senators David Marsden and Jennifer Wexton, and Fairfax County (VA) Sheriff Stacey Kincaid. He worked on former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson’s historic 2008 presidential campaign in Iowa and managed top-targeted red-to-blue congressional races in Kansas and Florida.
A Kansas native and barbecue enthusiast, Kiel has lived across the country working for progressive leaders and has sampled, enjoyed and harshly judged local smoked delicacies from Alaska to North Carolina and many places in between. Kiel lives in Denver with his wife who is much more interesting and a dog who is much more likable.
